When facing critical times such as the arrival of a hurricane and other natural disasters, it is important to focus on what maters the most; the protection of our lives, the lives of our family members and the lives of our beloved pets.
The KEY ahead of a disaster is timely preparation. Ready.Gov (Listo.Gov, en Español) is a great resource to develop a preparedness plan with recommendations on what to do prior, during, and after a hurricane. A coordinated plan of action, staying alert to official updates and following their guidelines can make a difference in safeguarding the wellbeing of our families.
As your family develops a plan of action, here are some vital preparedness points that may not be already on your radar:
Know whether your home is located in a mandatory evacuation zone
Identify in advance your neighborhood’s or city’s evacuation route
Identify the location of the closest shelter
Have at least three days’ worth of prescription medicine and medical necessities
Have enough food and water for pets for at least three days
Buy batteries compatible with your radios and flashlights
Have first-aid kits ready and review first-aid procedures
Download your county’s or FEMAs emergency mobile apps
Agree on a post-storm gathering place in the event that you are separated from your family and lose communication with them
Store important documents in a waterproof case and keep them with you
Have sufficient cash for at least three days’ worth of expenses
Secure the phone number of your home’s insurance company
Take exterior and interior photos of your home that include everything from ceilings to floors (This will be vital evidence to have when submitting an insurance claim in the event of hurricane damage)
As we all brace for the storm, The Marble Naturaviva family shares our best wishes and prayers with our Eastern Florida friends, neighbors and clients.
